The North West Workforce Development and Employment Practices study was jointly commissioned by the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA), the North West LSCs, ACAS (the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service) and the TUC (Trade Union Congress). The overall purpose of the study was to investigate the nature of human resource practices and workforce development, as well as the relationship with organisational performance. The study adopted a multi-method approach. This included: a literature review; an extensive survey of employing organisations (around 1,820 organisations with between 5 and 250 employees); in-depth case studies with 18 organisations; and, drawing on the survey results for the sub-sample of private sector organisations, multivariate regression analysis.
