It is generally believed that economic success is related to crime in such a way that a buoyant labour market is negatively associated with crime (in relatively prosperous times crime is lower), while a weaker labour market is positively associated with crime. However, a number of studies have found that rising female employment, which is generally thought of as a labour market improvement, is actually positively associated with crime.
