There has been a longstanding widespread interest, concern and debate about the lower average attainment of boys in schools and colleges in the UK . More recently attention has focussed on the growing differences between men and women in relation to participation and achievement in higher education. The Higher Education Initial Participation Rate (HEIPR) for 2007-08 is provisionally estimated to be 37.8 per cent for men and 49.2per cent for women (DIUS 2009).
This report analyses the differences in the participation of men and women in higher education, and in their success when there. It shows that on virtually all measures women outperform men, and it discusses some of the possible causes for this and the implications.
