The effect of having a disabled child on a mother’s work varies by definition of childhood disability. The strongest effects can be detected where the respondent reports that their child’s disability affects her ability to work (as would be expected), however, all childhood definitions have some negative effect on rates of paid work for mothers - most notably, problems which are reported to affect the child’s ability to attend school, and general health reported as ‘not good’.
