
The Minister for Education and Skills announced in his speech in February that, as part of our National Literacy Plan, we would be introducing a national reading test. We would also develop similar plans for numeracy. The National Reading and Numeracy Tests will be implemented on a statutory basis; the first groups of learners will sit tests in May 2013.

A series of four regional workshops will be held in February 2012. The workshops will provide practical advice and support in understanding the style, purpose and level of challenge in the PISA assessments and how PISA-style materials, used as part of everyday learning and teaching in secondary schools, can better prepare learners for this type of assessment and support a more expansive pedagogy. Secondary schools will be invited to the relevant workshop in their region through regional consortia. The Deputy Minister for Skills has announced the membership of the Project Board for the Review of Qualifications 14-19. The board will support Huw Evans OBE who was appointed as Chair of the Review in October.
This consultation seeks views on proposals to introduce an updated replacement for the Education (School Teachers’ Qualifications) (Wales) Regulations 2004. The consultation proposes to make changes to some of the requirements for recognition as a qualified teacher in Wales.

The first CLIC Awards was held on Saturday 19th November at the National Museum, Cardiff. The awards ceremony celebrated the outstanding work that young people across Wales did over the past year. Over 200 young people and professionals from all over Wales attended the event along with guest-of-honour Jeff Cuthbert AM, Deputy Minister for Skills, who announced the winner of CLICer of the Year Award.
