Plans for a new Welsh Skills and Employment Strategy were announced by the Welsh Assembly Government today [Wednesday 18 July 2007]. On the day that England publishes its response to the Leitch Review, the Welsh Minister for Skills, John Griffiths, outlined how Wales will rise to the challenges set out in Lord Leitch’s report into the skills profile of the UK economy.
A new Skills and Employment Strategy - due out for consultation in the autumn - will help to boost Wales’ prosperity by matching the nation’s skills to the evolving needs of employers and business. It will respond to the distinctive skills and employment needs of Wales where, for example, there is a particularly large proportion of small businesses.
Mr Griffiths said:
Following the publication of the Leitch Review, each of the four UK countries has been working on its own distinctive approach to tackling skills shortages and increasing people’s employability.
Here in Wales, we’ve also set up an independent review of the mission and purpose of our FE Colleges, chaired by Sir Adrian Webb. The new skills and employment strategy will bring together the views in the Leitch Report on skills needs and the views of the Webb Review on the readiness of our education and training sector to meet those needs.
