The percentage of pupils achieving level 5 (the expected level) or above varied from 76.4 per cent in Information Technology to 54.1 per cent in Welsh 2nd language. Girls performed better than boys in all subjects apart from in Physical Education, where boys outperformed girls. More

Schools across Wales will soon be receiving the tools to help them to save money, Welsh Assembly Government Ministers have announced. Launching the Schools Revenue Support Project DVD and guidance Andrew Davies, Minister for Finance and Public Service Delivery, said ‘Last autumn I highlighted the fact that an extra £20 million each year could be freed up for re-investment back into schools in Wales if teachers saved money when buying everyday equipment’ More
Teachers from across Swansea have been working over the last year to research new teaching ideas to share with fellow professionals in the region. Swansea LEA and the Swansea Metropolitan University ran a dissemination event, funded jointly with the General Teaching Council for Wales (GTCW), to allow primary and junior teachers from across the region to share best practice teaching methods and to explore new teaching ideas. This report evaluates the progress being made in implementing 14–19 reforms, based on visits to 16 local authority areas from April 2007 to March 2008. Partnerships were well established in almost all the areas visited and collaboration was effective in providing a broad range of courses, particularly in Key Stage 4. However, progression from 14 to 19 needs to be made clearer and more coherent, particularly for those on vocational programmes. More
A major new project investigating how employers can make the most of the skills of their workforce was launched today by the UK Commission for Employment and Skills. The Skills Utilisation project aims to identify exactly how employers can maximise the potential of all their staff and achieve more effective skills utilisation in the workplace at the same time as gaining improvements in performance - practices commonly referred to as High Performance Working. Triple science is seeing a resurgence in popularity, with a sharp rise in the number of entries for GCSEs in biology, chemistry and physics this year. Nearly 23,000 more students in England took biology this summer compared with 2007 – an increase of nearly 36 per cent. More
