Education Minister Leighton Andrews has celebrated the success and talent of vocational learners as part of Vocational Qualifications (VQ) Day.
Following the recommendations coming from the National Behaviour and Attendance Review and the resulting Attending and Behaviour Action Plan we have introduced new attendance codes and guidance on registration practices. The new guidance replaces the current Annex 4i of our Inclusion and Pupil Support guidance document.

As schools start preparing their reports to parents, colleagues are reminded that schools should treat all parents equally unless there is a court order limiting an individual parent’s exercise of parental responsibility. All parents are entitled to receive copies of their child’s school report. The total number of Welsh domiciled learners was 3 per cent lower in 2008/09 than in 2007/08 on a comparable cohort basis. 63 per cent of learners were enrolled at FE institutions (including their training subsidiaries), 15 per cent were enrolled at other training providers, 8 per cent were enrolled at local education authority community learning providers, 9 per cent were enrolled at school sixth forms and 5 per cent were enrolled at English providers.
A £15million scheme to raise the skills of over 16,000 workers across six counties in south east Wales has been announced by Deputy Minister for Science, Innovation and Skills Lesley Griffiths.

The UK Commission asked UVAC to build on work they carried out for the Westminster government looking at progression routes to higher level skills provision in England for those with applied and vocational qualifications. The Commission asked UVAC to extend its work to Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and present a picture of progression for the whole of the UK.
The Learning and Skills Improvement Service recently commissioned Mick Fletcher to review claims that the further education sector systematically misleads young people by offering courses that appear to lead to employment, but which in reality do not. The report examines the availability and validity of data on learner destinations and the potential for making better use of it.
An Ofsted report on food in schools shows that most pupils have a good understanding of what makes up a healthy diet. It also finds that in the majority of schools visited, food is attractive, nutritious and well prepared.
LLUK is carrying out its annual Sector Skills Assessment (SSA) to understand current and future national skills needs and the drivers of skills demand in the lifelong learning sector. The SSA identifies future skills priorities for the UK and each nation, including skills shortages and skills gaps, along with recommendations for addressing these issues.
