
Education Minister Jane Hutt has announced the names of the 99 schools which will pilot the School Effectiveness Framework in Wales from September. The Framework will put children and young people at the heart of education policy and delivery in Wales. More

In April 2006 CRG Research Ltd were commissioned to undertake an evaluation of (CIF). Key findings from the evaluation indicate that CIF has enabled the development of provider partnerships. Where partnerships already existed they have been strengthened – traditional barriers to collaboration such as mistrust are gradually being overcome and partners are beginning to play to each others strengths. In a report published last week by Estyn, inspectors found that schools implementing RAISE projects are reporting improvements. RAISE (Raising Attainment and Individual Standards in Education) is a Welsh Assembly Government initiative aimed at improving achievement levels amongst those who are economically and socially disadvantaged. A literature review followed by discussions with 25 basic skills providers/ practitioners and a survey of 200 learners, spread across Wales. The aims were to gather information on providers’ and practitioners’ views on the challenges involved in improving basic skills capacity in Wales, the key implications for policy and practice in Wales and to identify and discuss any recommendations. In a report released entitled ‘Merging the boundaries in adult community-based learning’, Estyn found that providers of adult education consistently deliver good quality education, but are not working together enough to create a joint programme which has been specifically tailored to address the needs of the community. There were 144,140 enrolments at Welsh HEIs, 4.6 per cent higher than 2005/06. 46 per cent of enrolments were part-time. There were 119,055 Welsh domiciled student enrolments at UK HEIs, 3.7 per cent higher than 2005/06. 51 per cent of enrolments were part-time. More

Higher education's contribution to the economy continued to grow in 2006-07 reaching record levels. The Higher Education - Business and Community Interaction (HE-BCI) survey, published today, reveals that UK higher education institutions (HEIs) received £2.64 billion from business and community interaction in 2006-07. This is a 17 per cent rise from the last survey (for 2005-06). More
