Estyn has published a review of ESOL provision. Wales has seen a significant increase in the number of migrant workers, refugees and asylum seekers entering the country over the last decade. The key points from the latest release are: For full-time first degree graduates from Welsh HEIs in 2006/07 whose destination was known at around 6 months after graduation: 62 per cent were in employment; 10 per cent were in a combination of work and study; 17 per cent were in further study only; and 6 per cent were assumed to be unemployed. A grant package of over £7.5m for early years and schools in Wales to improve basic skills levels has been announced by Deputy Minister for Skills, John Griffiths. As part of the Welsh Assembly Government’s ‘Words Talk - Numbers Count National Basic Skills Strategy’, the grants will provide additional funding for schools so they are better able to identify and support children falling behind in their learning.
